A sprite is a mythical fairy-like creature who is sometimes a trickster. This mischievous Sprite wanders close to the world of Samsara (our world of opposites and suffering) with its desires, enchantments, and dangers. This painting is meant to be a bit macabre and scary, just as our world can be.Â
The sprite, still connected to the heavenly realm (light streams above his head), stops short as it becomes aware it is descending into a darker realm of temptations and dangers. Above, the doves, fish, eyes of observation and compassion, and (corner right) joyous dancer represent the heavenly realm. This painting is meant to represent a state of mind, not Heaven or fear of Hell.
